Did you hear the news? The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) has extended the deadline to its 2021-23 Young Midwife Leaders (YML) programme. You now have until 11:59 PM CET on 17 December 2021 to submit your application to this life-altering programme aimed at providing 15 early-career midwives with comprehensive advocacy and leadership training specific to midwifery. Key features of the programme include:

  • Enhanced leadership development through workshops with external experts in a number of areas, including, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
  • Group and individual project work aimed at advancing midwifery regionally and globally
  • A mentor for each YML to develop their mentoring and advocacy skills

A bit of background on the YML programme 

The Young Midwife Leaders Programme is a two-year programme that supports a cohort of young midwives to develop their skills as leaders both professionally and personally. Created by ICM with support from Johnson & Johnson Foundation, the programme challenges young midwives globally to broaden their knowledge of key policy areas in maternal and newborn health and supports their innovative projects to address some of the biggest global health challenges of today.

The YML programme consists of:   

  • Online, interactive learning on leadership, and the role and function of International Confederation of Midwives   
  • A combination of group and individual projects  
  • ICM will support a chosen mentor for each YML to develop their mentoring skills    

The programme aims to identify young midwives with the potential to become leaders within their national midwifery communities and to build their capacity to become the global and regional midwifery leaders of tomorrow.
