The United Nations’ humanitarian relief agency says the number of people displaced within strife-torn Myanmar has for the first time exceeded 1 million, with well over half of those losing their homes.
The military junta destroys a village, with the villagers forced to flee, leaving all their belongings behind.
As reported by one eyewitness, the soldiers came to our village with an evil intent. They dared the people to come out, saying they would be shot on sight. My family slipped out the back, slinking through the unharvested paddy fields. The soldiers shot everyone and everything they saw! There was only one choice–run, or die.
Families like this seek out nunneries for safety.
Nunneries are now bursting beyond capacity due to the flood of families seeking shelter. With monsoon season approaching, conditions will only worsen. The nuns, themselves, are not rich in material, but rich in compassion and love for the people taking refuge.
Even before the 2021 attempted coup, nunneries in Myanmar were utilized by civilians as safe havens. One young girl, Aye Sander, lived at the Chanthar Aung Nunnery School with 350 other girls.
Aye Sander and her two younger sisters arrived at the nunnery when she was three years old. Born in Shan state, Aye Sander’s parents divorced when their small business failed. Unable to support the three girls on her own, her mother sent them away to Yangon to live at the nunnery and receive an education.
Post coup, education for the children in nunneries is, unfortunately, no longer the priority. Survival is the priority.
