In some parts of our world, the backlash for gender equality is here. And in other parts, we’re seeing the fruit of bold feminist movement building. To fuel the fire of change and to avoid the burnout that so many activists, advocates and changemakers experience, we need to organize. In an increasingly connected world, building global solidarity is the only way to sustain movements of change for gender equality, human rights, social justice and sustainability.

We’re facing growing obstacles for movements of positive change.

Five years ago #metoo shook the world and brought about change we couldn’t have dared to believe. A movement that swept continent after continent was formed in conversations by Tarana Burke. Yet, in the lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic men’s violence against women rose to alamaring levels around the world.

In 2020, global outcry against white supremacy followed the murder of George Floyd in the United States. Protests were held around the world, screaming that #blacklivesmatter – a movement that started in a conversation between three women. Yet in 2022, the UN names white supremacy as one of the largest threats to security in the western world.

This year, we’ve experienced global turmoil in so many ways. We’re in the midst of a climate crisis. An economic crisis. A food crisis and a pandemic. Political instability. Wars and conflicts – from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to the tragic and often forgotten disaster of Tigray in Ethiopia, or the violent military occupation in Myanmar. We’ve seen the human rights abuses in Iran and the brave women who are putting their lives at risk to lead the movement of change. We’ve witnessed pushbacks on reproductive rights and LGTQIA+ rights.

This year has been pain upon pain upon pain for so many. And many of us are managing both direct trauma of these crises or the secondary trauma of witnessing them unfold in front of our eyes.

We need global solidarity as we build movements for equality, rights and justice and rebuild locally.

There are movements that are building in strength that are dismantling human rights, stability, our climate and biodiversity, peace and security. And the movements that we are a part of for gender equality, human rights, social justice and sustainability need to grow to defend these core values and to push for progressive change.

I see Girls’ Globe as a part of this global movement for change, because I know that media has power in today’s world and that communicating our stories is one of the most powerful tools we have to inspire others to join our movement of change.
