When women have their land rights secured, the benefits are multiple. Not only is it a crucial part of ensuring gender equality, strong land rights for women help break the cycle of poverty for entire communities. Women’s land rights are also essential parts of addressing climate change, food security and global health.
Despite the importance of gender equality when it comes to owning and accessing land, sometimes laws and policies are lacking or patriarchal norms hold back local practice for women’s rights to land.
Leaders around the world have made formal commitments to promote and safeguard women’s land rights. The Stand for Her Land campaign aims to close the gap between these global commitments and local practice. It’s a campaign that is building global and local solidarity for women’s land rights.
So, what are the main objectives of Stand for Her Land, and if those objectives are realized, what would that world look like?
Dr. Monica Mhoja, Landesa Outreach Director for Africa, joined us in the Girls’ Globe Solidarity for a conversation on women’s land rights and the Stand for Her Land campaign.
